How I Made Wood Bead Garland

I’ve been working on little touches to add to Miss Addison’s room recently.  We painted her IKEA malm dresser to start, and now have moved on to several other projects.  I saw an inspiration picture on Pinterest, and knew I could recreate the wooden bead look to make some really pretty garland for her room.

I started with round wood balls in two sizes- 1 inch and 3/4 inch.  It was much cheaper to buy the solid wood balls as opposed to actual wood beads.  I picked these up at Hobby Lobby with a 40% off coupon.

I set the wood balls up in the vice and used my drill to create the holes.  Actually, I’m totally lying here.  It’s been a tad bit crazy, so Brandon did this step for me.  He used a drill bit that matched the size of the string I wanted to use to string the beads.  In just a couple of minutes, I had homemade wood beads!

Next, it was time to paint!  I’ve been so excited to try the new Americana Decor Maxx Gloss paints and have been waiting for the perfect project.  I’m in LOVE with these colors…I selected Aqua Waters and Juicy Melon.  There are so many great colors, and you can see all of the options here.

I just used a small paint brush and had them all painted up in about 10 minutes or so.  I did the larger beads in the Aqua Waters and the smaller in Juicy Melon.  I really love the super glossy finish the paint gave the beads.

In retrospect, it wasn’t my best idea ever to sit the beads down while still wet.  I’d probably try to think of another option next time, because when they did dry I had some stick to the paper plate and had to go back over them.  Maybe it would be better to string the beads and hang them somehow to paint?  I’ll get back to you if I have a better alternative in the future!

I let Addison help string the beads on some twine we had left from another project.  She loves to create patterns, so it was a great project for her to help with.

This was such a fun and simple project!  I love the pop of color it will bring to her bedroom.  We are still deciding if we want to keep it here on the bookshelf, or move it to the curtain rod once that’s complete (new curtains in the works as I write this post!).  Either way, I love the way this DIY Painted Garland turned out!

I’m already thinking maybe this could be a good Christmas project with green and red beads.  Or if I were more on the ball, how about orange and black for Halloween?!

Special thanks to DecoArt for providing the paint for this project as part of their Blogger Outreach Program.  All opinions of the products are entirely my own.
